6th March P2 9CY1 Mr Abe

In today’s lesson and for homework you are going to complete the Brain Dump task where you identify problems which may lend themselves to being solved by developing an app.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn:
  • To identify problems in your day-to-day life
  • To decompose problems into sub-sections
  • Research possible ways of solving such problems

Brain Dump Task

Each member of the team should come up with at least two or more different ideas for problems that possibly can be solved by making a  phone app.    Each team member should in their ‘Apps for Good’ doc write a section which includes the following:

  1. What is the problem e.g. “unhealthy hair”
  2. Description of the problem e.g. “People have different types of hair.  For example, some people have greasy hair others dry hair.  Some have split ends others fairly healthy hair. Treating hair with correct shampoo, conditioner, brushing and cutting can be very difficult”.
  3. What could an app do to help?
for example:
    1. Suggest different shampoos
    2. Suggest different conditioners
    3. Suggest brushing/combing frequencies
    4. Suggest cutting frequency
    5. Other treatments
    4. Potential problems?
for example:
  1. Collecting the data could be difficult.
  2. Could suggest links with more severe medical problems.

Research

Show the URL of where you have done research and say what you have found.

Your Job

  1. Discuss ideas with members of your team.
  2. Try exploring your day from getting up to going to bed and list all the problems you may encounter.  The size or seriousness of the problem  does not matter.
  3. Complete the ‘Brain Dump’ task in your CT Workbook as described above.  This needs to be completed by next lesson.
  4. Respond to this post with the URL of your CT Workbook.
Example comment:

I have come up with problems about “healthy hair” and “health finger-nails” and have completed the Brain Dump  Task in my CT Workbook:

Food in the Fridge App and Morning Planning App - what about alarms and online food recipes? What is the difference between your App and those?

      Delete
    2. for the morning app it makes a difference because it plans out your morning meaning that it is more efficient and helpful also it sets appropriate alarms for you so that you wake up on time and leave on time also if you forget to set an alarm with a normal alarm clock the app automatically dose it for you. for the food app it makes a difference because it will make it easier for the user and it is faster and it gives you lots of different exciting ideas for that one food all in one app. I will add these detail into my brain dump task.

Food in the Fridge App and Homework Planning App to find websites - I like the idea of the Homework Planner but I am interested in how it will actually work?

A Timetable Planning App and a Health Watch App. All sounds good but I am keen to know more about how they will work as an App, particularly the Timetable App which could prove very popular indeed.

I like the idea of the Nut Allergy App. That could prove really useful to people with such problems. Not too sure about the TV Series App though. How would that work?

Quite a few good ideas here. I like the Nut Allergy App but I also thought the School Bus Tracker App could be really useful but how would you track the bus? Would it require the cooperation of the bus companies, and or, pupils already on the bus? What would you use?

I see a list of ideas but not much by way of explanation. Could you give me an idea of what the Blind People Shopping App could do?

    3. Here is my up to date CT workbook with explanations for each app idea:

The blind people shopping app would help because there would be a camera and it would have a bar code sensor and it would tell the person what is in front of them and what is good about the product they are buying.

      Mobile Blue Tooth what?

      A calendar email what?

I do not think you have explained how to develop an App that can provide solutions to social problems. Could you watch the Apps for Good video again to understand it more? Watch the videos here ... http://www.appsforgood.org/public/case-studies

I kind of like the idea of a Lost Pet App but you have not really gone into more detail about how it would really work. Please elaborate ... i.e. please explain more how it will recover a lost pet even though the chip is connected to your mobile phone?

Missing Phonecall App? Is that a solution to a social problem? What happens to your 'missed calls log' on you mobile phone or even the log on your house phone if you have a modern handset?

We are looking for solutions to social problems like helping disabled people, helping pupils with homework etc.

An App that can find lost items? It would solve most of societies problems but I am really keen to know how it will work exactly? Please explain that step-by-step as I am really curious.
